Two hours of instruction begins with a 20-minute walk from Montezuma to Playa Grande, a white-sand beach backed by jungle where the lesson takes place. Your instructor (certified as both a lifeguard and ISA2 surfer) meets you there and starts on the sand, walking through how to stay safe in the ocean, how to position your body on the board to keep balance, and what to expect when the waves come. This ground-level training is where the fundamentals stick before you paddle out.
Once in the water, your instructor stays behind you, pushing your surfboard into the waves so you can focus on the motion of standing up rather than fighting to get into position. Beginners work in the white water. If you've surfed before, you'll move further out. The goal for a first lesson is simple: stand up on the board, feel steady, and understand what the sensation is. After an hour in the water, you take a break with your instructor to eat fresh fruit and recover before heading back out if you want to keep practicing. The lesson wraps with a walk back to Montezuma.
Surfboards and rashguards are provided and matched to your size and level. The instructors speak English and Spanish, and children from age 5 are welcome: the lesson adjusts to whoever shows up. No experience is required. The water and the board do the teaching once you know what to do with them.
