The Experience

You know that sound when tires crunch over gravel and you catch the faint smell of wet earth before you even see the trees? That’s how our 4x4 booze cruise out of Jaco started. I’d barely settled in when our guide—Carlos, who somehow knows everyone—pointed out a scarlet macaw overhead and then just grinned at my reaction. We were off, bouncing through backcountry roads while the morning was still cool enough to keep the windows open. The countryside here isn’t just green; it’s every shade you can imagine, and then some.

We stopped for our first drink at this riverside bar by Rio Turrubares. The place looked like it hadn’t changed in decades (in a good way). I tried to order in Spanish—Carlos laughed, probably because I butchered “cerveza fría”—and we all ended up wading into the river. The water was warm, not cold like I expected, and there was this moment where nobody talked for a second, just listening to birds and the clink of bottles. After that we hit a string of tiny towns—Angostura, Pavones—each with old churches and people waving as we passed. It felt like time moved slower there.

The highlight for me was Las Delicias. There’s an old saloon run by Pocho (who really is as friendly as they say), walls covered in faded photos and soccer jerseys. He poured us shots—something sweet and fiery—and told stories about fiestas that lasted all night. By then, everyone was laughing more easily, maybe because of the drinks or maybe just the mountain air. Our last stop before heading down was this mountaintop spot where lunch was waiting—rice, beans, something grilled—and I swear the view over Nicoya Peninsula made everything taste better.

I didn’t expect to care about the drive back down but seeing waterfalls flash past through rainforest mist felt kind of surreal after all that noise and laughter earlier. Even now, I still think about that patchwork of green hills rolling out toward the Pacific—and how Carlos slowed down so we could take it in without anyone saying a word.
