You’ll feel every bump and breeze on this 2-hour ATV adventure from Jaco into Costa Rica’s rainforest. Climb to Agujitas Mountain for sweeping ocean views, pause by a hidden waterfall, and follow your local guide along winding jungle trails. Expect mud on your clothes and maybe a new story to tell.
We were already halfway up the muddy trail before I realized how loud the jungle really is — birds calling over the engine, that thick green smell everywhere. Our guide, Carlos, had just waved us off from the shop in Jaco, grinning like he knew what was coming. I’d never driven an ATV before (my friend still teases me about stalling it right at the start), but somehow it felt right, bouncing along behind him as we left the main road and dove into the trees.
The air changed as we climbed higher towards Agujitas Mountain. It got cooler, almost damp, and I kept catching flashes of blue ocean through gaps in the leaves — you don’t expect to see the Pacific from way up here, but there it was. Carlos stopped us at this little clearing where you could see all the way out to Nicoya Peninsula. He pointed out a hawk circling above us — “gavilán,” he said — and then just let us stand there for a minute. I didn’t say much; sometimes silence feels bigger than talking, you know?
On the way back down we took a side trail that looked like nothing but mud and roots until suddenly there was this tiny waterfall trickling down rocks. Not huge or anything, but cold enough when I splashed my face (I think my shirt’s still stained from that red dirt). No food or drinks included on this tour — just water bottles in our bags — but honestly I didn’t miss it. The ride itself was kind of its own reward.
