Follow coffee beans from soil to your cup in one morning or afternoon

A hands-on coffee class in Costa Rica's Poás Volcano region where you learn the entire production process (planting, harvesting, processing, roasting), and taste the finished brew. Expert guides lead small groups through each stage, with morning and afternoon sessions available. Wheelchair accessible and suited to families.

The experience

You'll work through the complete coffee journey in a single session, starting with how seeds become plants and moving through every step that turns them into the coffee you drink. The class covers planting, harvesting, measuring, pulping, drying, threshing, and roasting, with hands-on engagement at each stage rather than watching from the side. A knowledgeable guide walks the group through the reasoning behind each process (why beans are dried a certain way, what roasting does to flavor), so you understand what you're tasting at the end.

The tasting session is where the learning lands. You'll sample Costa Rican coffee prepared fresh, tasting how the methods you just learned shape what's in your cup. Small group size means you can ask questions without holding up a crowd, and the setting in the Poás Volcano region gives the class its backdrop without turning it into a sightseeing tour.

Morning and afternoon slots let you fit this around the rest of your day. The whole experience runs about an hour, so it works as a standalone activity or as part of a larger itinerary. Families with children are welcome. The hands-on format keeps kids engaged, and strollers and infant seats are available if needed.

Is this one for you?The class is built around doing, not watching: you'll handle beans and equipment at each stage, so wear clothes you don't mind getting a little soil on. An hour of standing and light hands-on work is the pace. If you prefer to observe rather than participate, this format may not suit you as well as a plantation tour would.
