The Experience

The first thing I learned in Costa Rica: don’t trust your umbrella. Ours flipped inside out before we even left San José — the rain here is a whole character of its own. Our driver just grinned and said, “Pura vida,” like it explained everything (it kind of does). The city was busy and a bit chaotic, but I liked watching people crowd around the fruit stalls. Our hotel felt like a calm pocket in all that movement.

The drive to Arenal Volcano was long enough for me to lose track of time — cows everywhere, fields so green it almost hurt my eyes. We stopped at a roadside stand for coffee that tasted almost chocolatey; I spilled some on my shirt and the woman behind the counter handed me napkins with a smile. The volcano itself looked unreal, half-shrouded in cloud. Our guide, Marta, pointed out how you can still see smoke sometimes (no lava these days). Hiking up the old lava flow was tougher than I’d expected — every step crunchy underfoot — but standing there with the lake below and that silent giant above… I still think about that view.

Monteverde felt colder somehow — not cold exactly, just damp in a way that got into your bones. Walking those suspension bridges high above the forest floor made my stomach drop at first. But then you notice little things: moss on the ropes, birds calling somewhere you can’t see. At the butterfly garden our guide tried to get us to hold a blue morpho; I chickened out but my friend did it and laughed when it tickled her hand. Lunches were always simple but fresh — rice, beans, plantains — nothing fancy but somehow perfect after hiking.

By the time we reached Manuel Antonio I’d stopped caring if my hair ever dried again. The park was crowded near the entrance but quiet once we walked deeper in; we saw monkeys stealing snacks from someone’s bag (don’t do that), and a sloth so still I thought it was fake until it blinked. Swimming at Playa Espadilla Sur felt surreal after all those forests — warm sand, salt on my skin, iguanas sunbathing like they owned the place. Leaving was harder than I thought it’d be.
