The experience
Doka Estate is one of Costa Rica's largest coffee operations, and the tour walks you through what happens at each stage, from seed germination through the development of the plant to harvest and processing. You'll see the plantation itself, then move through the processing plant and packing house where the beans are sorted and prepared. The guide explains the history of the estate, its owners, the varieties grown here, and how the geography of the Central Valley shapes what grows. Lunch is a traditional meal served on the grounds.
After the estate, the route takes you a short drive to Grecia, a small traditional town whose main landmark is its church, built entirely from pre-fabricated steel plates painted deep red: an unusual structure in a region of wooden colonial buildings. From there, Sarchi is just next door: a quaint artisan town where local craftspeople make and sell intricate wooden oxcarts by hand, along with other souvenirs and traditional arts and crafts. These handcrafted carts are sold throughout Costa Rica and are among the country's most recognizable exports.
The tour runs seven hours total and includes private transportation from your hotel, bottled water throughout the day, lunch, and coffee or tea. Your guide speaks English or Spanish, and the pace suits all fitness levels. Infants travel on an adult's lap.
