San Luis Hiking and Natural Pools

  • Travel to San Luis town and hike along riverbank
  • Swim and jump in natural pools

The Experience

The drive out to San Luis takes a couple of hours, but it’s worth every minute. We left Medellín early—windows down, coffee from a roadside tienda in hand. The air gets cooler as you climb into the hills; by the time we rolled into San Luis, the scent of wet earth and wood was everywhere. This place is green in a way that almost hurts your eyes.

Our guide, Andrés, grew up around here. He led us along narrow trails hugging the Dormilón River. You’ll hear birds you can’t name and see flashes of blue morpho butterflies if you’re lucky. The real fun starts at the water: there are more than ten natural pools carved out of smooth rock—some deep enough for cannonballs, others perfect for just floating and looking up at the trees. I lost count after my fifth jump. The water’s cold but not shocking; it wakes you up fast.

We stopped for snacks by a mossy boulder—Andrés pointed out wild guava growing nearby. There aren’t crowds like at Río Claro; sometimes it’s just your group and the sound of water tumbling over stones. If you want something off the usual path with real local flavor, this is it.

What’s included

Your day includes private transportation from your hotel (air-conditioned), all jungle hiking and swimming activities at the natural pools, health insurance coverage during the tour, plus a professional bilingual guide who knows these trails inside out.

What should I bring for swimming?

A swimsuit, towel, sturdy shoes that can get wet (like hiking sandals), sunscreen, and maybe a change of clothes for after the river.

Is this tour family-friendly?
