The Experience

I still remember how the city noise faded as we left Medellín behind at sunrise—one minute you’re weaving through traffic, then suddenly it’s just green hills and that soft mist clinging to everything. Our guide, Camilo, showed up right on time (too cheerful for 7am if you ask me) and by the first stop, I was already regretting not grabbing a second coffee. But the view over the central mountain range—waterfalls threading down the slopes—kind of woke me up. There was this tiny roadside café where everyone seemed to know Camilo; he ordered something called “arepa de choclo” for us, and I tried to say it right but mostly just made the cook laugh.

The real adventure started when we switched to this battered old 4x4 truck. The road turned bumpy fast, like teeth-rattling bumpy, and I could smell wet earth through the open windows. The air got thicker as we entered the Melcocho forest reserve—almost sweet with all those plants and that damp wood scent. You could hear birds everywhere, even if you couldn’t see them. Camilo pointed out some orchid-looking thing growing out of a tree trunk; I pretended to know what he meant but honestly had no clue.

The first sight of the Melcocho river actually made me stop walking. It’s clear—like really clear—you can see every stone under your feet when you wade in (cold enough to make my teeth hurt).
