The experience
You arrive in Cali with a free afternoon and no interest in watching culture from a distance. This class puts you inside it: you'll learn actual salsa steps, pick up percussion instruments and play them, then walk through the spaces where the rhythm was born. The experience centers on Cali's only musical monument, where you stand under giant trumpets and hear the stories of Grupo Niche, Guayacán and the other orchestras that made the city the Salsa Capital of the World. A local guide walks you through the connection between tobacco, vinyl and the sound itself: the phrase "If it smells like cane, tobacco and pitch" carries the whole history of how Cali's identity got built into its music.
From the monument, you move through Calle del Sabor, where locals and visitors gather to hear live salsa in the open air, then to Calle de la Egunta and its massive woven sky: a colorful corridor that doubles as one of the city's most photographed spots. You'll see the original collection of the first salsa orchestra in Cali, instruments and all. The class includes a traditional lulada drink, and on weekdays you paint your own souvenir at a foundation housed in an 18th-century colonial building, now supporting more than 60 women heads of household. A guide in your choice of English, Spanish or French leads the whole thing, and the pace suits all fitness levels.

Is this one for you? You're learning and making things yourself, not watching a demonstration, so you'll leave with actual steps in your body and a painted piece in your hands. The guide leads the whole route and explains the connections between the spaces, which works well if you want the stories behind what you're seeing rather than wandering on your own.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?

Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (10 to 17 years). Under 10: they can't be included in the booking.
What exactly do I learn to play in the percussion part?
The class includes live percussion instruction using the original instruments from Cali's first salsa orchestras. You'll handle and play them as part of the experience at the musical monument, learning how they fit into the sound that defines the city.
Can I bring my ten-year-old, or is this only for adults?

Is the souvenir I paint something I actually get to take home?
Yes, you craft and paint your own memory at the foundation during the visit. This is available Monday through Friday. The piece is yours to keep.
What is Calle del Sabor actually like when we get there?
Calle del Sabor is one of Cali's most vibrant gathering spaces, where locals and visitors come to hear live salsa in the open air. You'll experience the energy and rhythm firsthand as part of the walk, not as observers.
Do I need to know how to dance salsa before I sign up?
No prior experience is needed. The class teaches you salsa steps as part of the full sensory immersion, and it's designed for all fitness levels.
