The Experience

We started in San Antonio, where the pavement was still damp from last night’s rain and the air had that earthy smell I always forget I miss until I’m back in Colombia. Our guide, Camilo, handed out little maps but mostly just waved his hand and said, “Don’t worry — we’ll walk slow.” Fifteen minutes later, we were standing in Jairo Varela Plaza, surrounded by trumpet sculptures and kids chasing pigeons. Camilo told us about Grupo Niche and suddenly I could hear salsa music drifting from a shop window nearby. It felt like the city was humming under our feet.

Walking through Cali’s historic center is nothing like reading about it. We ducked into La Merced Church — cool inside, stone walls thick with stories. You could almost taste the dust and candle wax in the air. At Caicedo Square, palm trees swayed over old men playing chess (one of them winked at me when I tried to guess who was winning). There was this moment on Boulevard del Río when the breeze picked up and you could smell fruit from a vendor’s cart — maracuyá maybe? Or guava? Anyway, it made me hungry right then.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a day trip in Cali. Camilo tried teaching us how to say “lulo” properly — Li laughed when I butchered it in Spanish — and then handed us ice-cold lulada under the shade of giant ceiba trees near Simón Bolívar Park. The drink was tart and sweet at once; sticky fingers, but worth it. Later we wandered down Flavor Street (I think that’s what he called it), where salsa music just pours out of every doorway. The murals there are wild — colors everywhere, even on people’s clothes.

By the time we crossed the bridge over the Cali River and looked back at Three Crosses Hill, my feet were sore but my head was full of new names and half-remembered stories about gold legends and independence heroes. Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes — city noise below us, sunlight catching on the river, Camilo waving goodbye with a grin like he knew something we didn’t.
