The experience
The tour starts in the historic core and works through Caicedo Square, the city's political and commercial center since its founding, then moves into San Antonio, where the architecture tells the story of colonial Cali: thick-walled houses with wooden beams, central patios and the characteristic barred windows that define the neighborhood. You'll see the Merced convent complex, which housed different religious orders across centuries and now holds a museum of colonial religious art, and the Teatro Municipal, built in the 19th century on the model of Italian opera houses with original imported details: curtains from Rome, seats from Austria, and coffered ceilings commissioned from Paris.
The walk takes you to the Cat Park, where a three-ton bronze sculpture of a cat sits on the left bank of the Cali River: a 1996 addition to the city's riverfront renewal project that required dismantling the workshop roof in Bogotá just to move it. You'll cross the Ortiz Bridge, which structures the main axis of the city and marks different stages of its urban development, and pass through Jairo Varela Square, renamed in 2012 to honor the founder of the Niche group, with a 24-meter sound sculpture celebrating the wind instruments that defined the band's sound. Private transportation moves you between stops, and a typical drink of the city is included.
By the end, you'll have walked the neighborhoods that matter and heard the stories behind them: enough to spend your remaining days in Cali choosing your own route back to the places that caught your eye.
