The experience
You arrive at the trailhead and begin a two-hour climb into the mountains above Santa Marta. The path rises through terrain the Kogui have inhabited for centuries, and the guide, a member of the community, shares stories and traditions as you walk. This is not a rushed summit push. The pace is built around conversation and the landscape itself.
At the community shelter, you spend time learning how the Kogui live, their relationship to the land, and the cultural knowledge passed down through generations. From there, the group visits mama duwanaby, the ancestral sacred stone that holds spiritual significance for the community. You then descend into La Danta gorge, where Poza del Amor (a natural pool fed by the river) offers a chance to swim and cool off after the morning's climb. The whole day takes around eight hours from start to finish.
Lunch is a peasant meal prepared with organic products the community grows and harvests themselves. Fruit is included as well. After eating and resting, you make the short walk back to the exit point and return to your hotel. The tour includes entrance to the community, community transport, and health insurance.
