We stepped out of the van just as the sun started warming up El Zaino, that sort of sticky heat that clings to your shirt. Our guide, Andrés, handed out water bottles and grinned like he’d done this a hundred times (probably had). There was this earthy smell—wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t place. We set off into Tayrona’s trails with a small group, boots crunching over roots while monkeys chattered above. I tried to spot one but only caught flashes of tails and sudden rustling.

The walk isn’t easy—two hours in each direction—but it’s not a race. Andrés stopped us near some tangled mangroves and pointed out a tiny caiman sunning itself. At one point we passed a few Kogui kids watching us quietly; their white tunics looked impossibly clean for jungle life. Andrés explained how their community still lives here, mostly untouched by all this tourism. Felt strange to just walk by, honestly—I kept thinking about them long after we left that patch of forest.

When we finally reached Cabo San Juan, the sand was hot enough to sting my feet but the water—wow. Cool and salty and clear enough to see little fish darting around my ankles. Lunch at the beach restaurant was simple (I went for fried fish; no regrets), and then we hiked up to the viewpoint where everything just opens up: jungle behind you, endless blue ahead. There’s even a nudist beach if you’re feeling brave (I wasn’t). The way back felt quieter somehow, maybe because everyone was tired or maybe because it’s hard not to get lost in your own thoughts after a day like that.
