The Experience
Mornings here start cool—mist clings to the hills as we set off down a narrow path. The first thing I noticed was the sound of water somewhere ahead. Our guide, Luis, pointed out tiny yellow birds darting between guava trees. After about twenty minutes, we reached a small waterfall—nothing huge, but the water was so clear you could see every pebble at the bottom. I dipped my hands in; it was icy and fresh. There’s this earthy smell too, like wet leaves and moss.
Next stop: a rustic sugar mill tucked behind some banana plants. We watched locals grind sugarcane by hand—honestly, it looked like hard work. The old wooden mill creaked as they turned it. Luis handed us a piece of warm panela straight from the press; it tasted sweet and a bit smoky. You could hear chickens clucking nearby and someone playing vallenato on their phone.
We climbed up to a natural viewpoint after that. The view over Jardín is something else—you get this patchwork of red roofs and green fields below. It’s quiet up there except for distant church bells and the wind rustling through eucalyptus trees.
The last stop was an artisan coffee house right on the edge of town. The owner roasted beans while we watched; the smell filled the whole place—kind of nutty and rich. We tried a cup sitting outside on mismatched chairs, watching clouds drift over the mountains.
