The experience

The trek starts in the páramo (the high-altitude grassland that blankets the Colombian Andes), and climbs about 400 meters over uneven, muddy trails to reach the glacial lagoons. At this elevation, each hour of hiking carries the effort of two hours at sea level, so the pace is deliberate and the air thin. The landscape shifts as you climb: the páramo's low vegetation and open sky give way to the stark beauty of the alpine zone, where the only sounds are wind and water. Temperature swings fast here. Expect around 10°C in the meadows, dropping to 5°C with cloud cover, or warming to 16°C under direct sun. Rain is common, especially May through August.

A certified guide leads the route in English, Spanish, Italian or French, depending on the option you choose. The trek is classified as high difficulty, and the operator requires good physical fitness: the combination of steep terrain, altitude and thin air makes this a serious undertaking, not a casual walk. Anybody between 10 and 70 years old can join if they're prepared for the demands. You'll carry water and layers. The operator recommends dressing for cold and rain at the mountaintop. Transport from Bogotá, mandatory park insurance and admission are included, along with a cheese arepa snack.

Two options are available at checkout: a bilingual trek or one conducted entirely in Spanish, each running four hours of active hiking within the full 10-hour day. Rubber boots and hiking poles can be rented if you don't have your own gear. No plastics are allowed in the park, so pack accordingly. Lunch is not included, so bring food or plan to eat before or after the trek.

What’s included

  • Certified park guide in your choice of language.
  • private transportation from Bogotá.
  • mandatory park insurance and park admission.
  • cheese arepa snack.

Is this one for you?The four-hour active hiking window suits travelers with solid fitness who've acclimatized to altitude, but the 10-hour total day (including transport and the trek itself) demands a full commitment. Choose this trek if you're prepared for steep, muddy terrain and thin air above 3,000 meters. If you prefer lower-altitude walks or have cardiovascular concerns, a different route in the region may suit you better.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Italian.

What is the páramo, and why does hiking there feel so different?

The páramo is the high-altitude grassland ecosystem of the Andes, found above the tree line. At 3,800 meters, the air pressure is so low that each hour of hiking equals two hours of effort at sea level, and the landscape is open, windswept and treeless: a stark contrast to lower elevations.

How steep and muddy do the trails actually get?

The trails are steep and uneven, with an elevation gain of about 400 meters, and they are muddy most of the time. The trek is classified as high difficulty, so expect challenging footing and a pace that accounts for altitude and terrain.

What temperature should I expect, and what should I pack?

Average temperature in the páramo is around 10°C, but it can drop to 5°C with cloud cover or rise to 16°C in direct sun. Pack layers for cold and rain. The operator emphasizes dressing well for the mountaintop conditions, where weather can change rapidly.

Can I rent hiking gear if I don't have my own boots and poles?

Rubber boots and hiking wooden poles are available to rent as an optional add-on at checkout, so you don't need to bring your own if you prefer to rent on the day.

What's included in the 10-hour day, and what do I need to bring separately?

The trek includes certified guide, transport from Bogotá, park insurance, admission and a cheese arepa snack. Lunch is not included, so bring your own food or plan to eat before departure. Water and layers are essential to carry with you.
