Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Chingaza National Park from Bogotá

  • Stop in La Calera town
  • Meet local guide at park entrance
  • Hike Rincón del Oso Trail
  • Observe spectacled bears and deer

The experience

The tour leaves Bogotá with hotel pickup and a private vehicle, climbing northeast into the Eastern Hills. On the way, you can stop in La Calera if you want to pick up supplies or grab a meal before entering the park. Once at Chingaza, your local guide meets you at the entrance to the Rincón del Oso Trail, which starts at the Piedras Gordas Control Post inside the reserve.

The hike itself lasts three to three and a half hours depending on your pace and fitness. You move through páramo and high Andean forest across a landscape that shifts between warm lowlands and cold mountain zones, passing through wetlands, jungles and humid forests. The park's 76,600 hectares hold the birth of hundreds of water sources that feed the region, and if conditions align, you may see spectacled bears or deer. The temperature swings between 4°C and 21.5°C, so layers matter. Bottled water is provided, and the guide interprets the ecology and the cultural history the Muiscas and Guayupes peoples left in this territory.

The full day (including the drive, the stop in La Calera if you take it, the hike and the return to Bogotá) runs about six and a half hours. You travel in a private vehicle with only your group, and entry to the national park is included in the price.

What’s included

  • Local guide in English or Spanish.
  • private vehicle transport with hotel pickup.
  • entry to Chingaza National Park.
  • bottled water.
