The experience

The Cerros Orientales rise at the edge of the city, part of the east-Andean range that sits at 2,600 meters and shapes Bogotá's weather and landscape. Most visitors never see them, even though they dominate the skyline. A private vehicle picks you up at your hotel after sunrise and drives you to the trailhead at the mountain's base, where the hike begins. The route climbs to a lookout at 3,100 meters with an unobstructed view over the entire city and the savannah beyond.

Along the way, your guide explains the ecological tension between native species and invasive plants taking over the forest, the environmental pressures Bogotá faces, and how the local administration has only recently opened these trails to the public. The hike takes four hours total, including the climb, time at the lookout, and the descent. You return to the city by vehicle and are dropped at your hotel or wherever you prefer.

The guide speaks your choice of Spanish or English. Passport information is required for entry to the Forest Reserve. The altitude and terrain demand at least a moderate fitness level. The operator recommends waiting two days after arrival in Bogotá before hiking if you're not accustomed to high elevation. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring a rain jacket and sunscreen, and pack a hat.

What’s included

  • Private vehicle transfer from your hotel to the trailhead and back.
  • access to the Forest Reserve.
