Kiteboarding Lesson in Cartagena
- Kiteboarding lesson at Windspot Beach Club
The Experience
I’ll be honest, I was nervous about trying kitesurfing in Cartagena — I mean, I can barely keep my balance on a paddleboard. But something about the breeze off the Caribbean and the way the locals just glide over the water made me want to give it a shot. When we got to Windspot Beach Club, our instructor (his name was Andrés) greeted us with this big grin and immediately started cracking jokes about how everyone falls at least once. That actually helped — took the edge off.
The first part of the lesson was on the sand, which surprised me. We practiced steering and flight control with these smaller trainer kites, and I kept getting tangled up in the lines (Andrés just laughed and showed me again — he’s got patience). The wind smelled salty and there was music drifting over from a beach bar somewhere down the shore. It felt laid-back but focused at the same time. Once we moved into the water, everything changed — suddenly you’re feeling the pull of the kite for real, and it’s both weirdly peaceful and kind of wild.
I wiped out more than once (maybe more than three times), but every time I looked back at Andrés he’d just give a thumbs up or shout something encouraging in Spanish. There were other beginners around too, so nobody cared if you looked silly. By the end of my 90-minute kitesurf experience I managed to stand up for a few seconds — not exactly gliding like those pros, but enough that I caught myself grinning like an idiot. My arms were sore but it felt good, you know? The sun was starting to dip behind some clouds and there was this golden light on everything. Still think about that feeling sometimes when I hear wind chimes back home.
