The Experience

We were already covered in a fine layer of dust when our guide, Luis, waved us over to the line of chunky red ATVs. I’d never driven one before — not really — so my heart was thumping as he ran through the basics in Spanish and English. The engine’s rumble mixed with the sound of distant waves (you could just make out the salt in the air if you breathed deep enough). We set off bumping along dirt tracks outside Cartagena, passing scrubby trees and a few goats that didn’t seem bothered by all our noise.

The mountain terrain surprised me — it wasn’t what I pictured for Cartagena at all. There were steep bits where I had to grip tighter, and Luis kept glancing back to check we hadn’t lost anyone. At one point, he pointed out a view where you could see the city shimmering way off in the haze. Then came the zipline tower. My hands were still buzzing from driving when they clipped us onto two lines (extra safe, apparently — I liked that). The platform creaked under my sneakers. The wind up there was sharp and salty; someone behind me made a nervous joke about flying lessons.

I pushed off and for a second it was just wind and this wide sweep of green below, then suddenly you’re over a canyon with the ocean flashing blue in the corner of your eye. It was quick but weirdly peaceful — not scary like I’d thought. When we landed everyone was laughing, even the quiet guy who barely spoke all morning. After that we got back on the ATVs for another round down towards what they called their “private beach.” Didn’t expect to go full throttle next to crashing waves but there we were, sand spraying everywhere.

Lunch was simple but good — grilled chicken, rice, cold water bottles handed around while we wiped dust off our faces. Luis told us how he grew up nearby; he seemed proud of this spot. I still think about that first moment on top of the tower looking out at Cartagena from so far away — it felt like seeing it for the first time again.
