The Experience

The 999-step staircase at Tianmen Mountain is the first thing that stops you. Each step is said to bring a blessing in Chinese tradition, and by the time you reach the top—where Tianmen Cave sits 131.5 meters high, the world's highest natural arch—you understand why pilots flew through it in 1999 just to prove they could. The mountain itself rises to 1,518.6 meters, and the cable car down takes 28 minutes, dropping 1,277 meters while you watch villages and reservoirs shrink below you. That's Asia's longest alpine cableway, and it's included in most of the combo packages.

What makes this work is the flexibility. You pick which attractions matter to you—Tianmen Mountain alone, or add the 72 Qilou towers (open 8am to 10pm), or Furong Town (7am to 3:30pm), or all three. The glass walkway at Tianmen is optional and costs extra (5 CNY per 60-meter section), but it's worth knowing about if you want that particular kind of adrenaline. The escalator up to Tianmen Cave is also separate (32 CNY), so you can skip the 999 steps if your knees aren't interested. Entry is strict about timing—you book a slot and have to use it during that window, no early or late entry—but that's what keeps the crowds manageable and means you're not standing in line for hours.

You'll need your original passport at the gate; they enforce real-name policy. The Tianmen Mountain Cableway, the Three Cableways inside the national forest park, the Bailong Elevator, and optional activities like the mountain slide and lake cruise can all be pre-booked through the same service if you want to add them on. Public transport runs nearby if you're not arranging a private driver, and the whole setup is designed so you're not juggling separate tickets for each spot.
