The experience
The day starts at your hotel, airport or station around 8:30 a.m., or whenever you request, and the drive to the Terracotta Warriors Museum takes about an hour. You'll spend 2.5 to 3 hours walking through the three excavation pits and the Bronze Chariots exhibition without stopping at any tourist shops. The museum is the centerpiece, and your guide explains what you're standing in front of as you move through it. After lunch at a local restaurant (your choice whether to eat, and what you order is on you), the drive back to Xi'an takes another hour.
The second half of the day is yours to shape. You pick two attractions from five options. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a Tang dynasty temple where your guide explains the Buddhist philosophy and why the structure leans. If you visit on a chanting day, monks and believers will be in the courtyard. The City Wall, built 600 years ago, lets you walk or rent a bike for 20 to 30 minutes along the top while your guide talks through the history. Banpo Village is a 6,000-year-old matriarchal settlement with three sections (living houses, burial tombs and pottery kilns) plus displays and videos that show what daily life looked like then. The Daoist temple is where local people go to pray and listen to monks chant. The Muslim Quarter and Great Mosque offer street food and a 1,300-year-old mosque that blends Chinese garden design with Islamic architecture.
Your guide speaks English. If you need Spanish, French, German or Italian, there's a 400 RMB surcharge and you'll need to request it three days ahead. The car is private, and you choose your pickup and drop-off point: hotel, airport, train station or subway. Water is included. If you have dietary needs or are traveling with infants, note that when you book. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available, and infant seats can be arranged.
