The Experience

“You can’t really prepare for your first glimpse of those Terracotta Warriors. Our guide, Li, had warned us it would be busy but somehow still felt quiet — maybe it was the way everyone just stopped talking at once when we entered Pit 1. The air smelled faintly of clay and something old, like a cellar after rain. Li pointed out the tiny details on their faces (no two the same), and I tried to imagine what it was like digging them up for the first time. Three hours there went by weirdly fast — I barely noticed my feet getting sore.

Lunch was this little spot tucked behind a market street — not fancy, but honestly some of the best noodles I’ve had. Li laughed when I tried to say ‘biangbiang’ in Mandarin — probably butchered it. After that we drove back toward downtown Xi’an for the city wall. Climbing up those stone steps felt like stepping into another world (and yeah, my legs complained). There were locals out jogging or just sitting on benches watching the city below. We rented bikes for half an hour and rode along the top — wind in our faces, bits of conversation drifting up from the moat park below.

The last stop was Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It leans a little more than you’d expect, which made me nervous at first (Li joked it’s been like that for centuries). There were monks chanting in the courtyard — low voices blending with birdsong and the distant sound of traffic. I stood there longer than I meant to, thinking about how many people have passed through here over all those dynasties. Even now, days later, that feeling sticks with me.
