Most visitors to Beijing spend their first morning in a ticket queue at the Temple of Heaven. You won't. The QR code they send you before arrival means you scan at the gate and walk straight in—no reference numbers, no barcodes, just the code on your phone. The complex itself is enormous: 267 hectares of ceremonial grounds where Ming and Qing emperors performed heaven worship rituals between 1368 and 1911. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the architecture alone—the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the Circular Mound Altar—justifies the early start.

The ticket covers entry to all three main sections, and the opening hours give you real flexibility. From April through October the grounds open at 6am, the halls at 8am; in winter it's 6:30am and the same. Last entry to the halls is 5:30pm in summer, 4:30pm in winter, so you have a full morning or early afternoon to move through at your own pace. There's no guide, no group, no schedule—you navigate the site yourself, which means you can linger at the Circular Mound Altar as long as you want or move quickly through the outer gardens if the crowds build up. Public transport gets you there easily; the nearest subway station is a short walk.

One practical thing: children under 18 and seniors 60 and over enter free, but they'll need to show a passport at the gate to prove it. If you're traveling with family, that saves money and time. The site is accessible for all fitness levels—you can walk the whole thing or take it in sections depending on your pace and the weather. In summer the heat builds fast, so an early entry really does matter.
