The Hall of Prayer is the thing everyone comes for. It's a triple-eaved circular hall with a blue glazed roof sitting on a three-tiered white marble platform, and it was built entirely with wooden structures and no nails—28 giant nanmu pillars hold it up, each one representing seasons, months, hours, or constellations. When you stand in front of it, the scale hits different. The Echo Wall comes next, a smooth circular wall surrounding the Imperial Vault of Heaven where sound bounces in ways that shouldn't work but do. Whisper at one end and someone standing far away hears you clearly. There are also the Three Echo Stones and a Dialogue Stone nearby if you want to test it yourself.

The Circular Mound Altar is the last major stop—a three-tiered open terrace made of white marble where emperors used to worship Heaven on the winter solstice. Everything here is designed in multiples of nine, which is the heavenly number in Chinese culture. Stand on the Central Heavenly Stone at the very center and your voice sounds loud and strange, like the space itself is listening. The whole complex is wheelchair accessible, and if you're traveling with kids or need a stroller, that works too. Public transportation is nearby if you need it.
