The Experience

The Bund is where you start, and it's the thing that makes Shanghai feel like Shanghai — a two-kilometer promenade where the Huangpu River runs below and the skyline splits itself in half. On one side, the older European buildings face the water; on the other, the glass towers of Pudong rise up like they're trying to touch something. Then comes Yu Garden, the part of Shanghai that still feels like old Shanghai — narrow lanes, wooden bridges, a garden that took three centuries to build and somehow fits inside the city without being swallowed by it. There are shops and restaurants here, but the garden itself is quiet enough that you can hear water moving under the bridges.

Lunch happens at a local restaurant, not a tour-group place — the kind where the menu changes and they'll adjust for what you eat. After that, Xintiandi, which used to be the French Concession and now is a mix of restored shikumen buildings (those old Shanghai townhouses) turned into galleries, bars, and cafés. It's gentrified, sure, but it's also the place where you can see how Shanghai borrowed from the West and made it its own. The Jade Buddha Temple comes last, and it's smaller and quieter than you might expect — two jade Buddhas brought from Burma in the 1800s, monks still living there, incense smoke moving through the halls. If you want, the Jin Mao Tower observation deck on the 88th floor is optional; it adds another hour and costs extra, but on a clear day you can see the whole sprawl of Pudong from up there.

The van is air-conditioned, the driver knows the route so there's no navigation stress, and the whole day runs without dragging you into shops or slowing down for commission stops. It's nine hours door-to-door, which is long enough to see the shape of the city without feeling rushed through it.
