The experience

Your guide and driver collect you from your Nanjing hotel or railway station and drive to Purple Mountain. The morning centers on two major stops: the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, where you walk through gardens and learn the history of the founder of the Republic of China, and Xiaoling Tomb from the Ming Dynasty, a complex of ancient architecture set into the mountainside. Between them you pass stone statues of mythical animals lining the paths, and depending on the season you'll see cherry blossoms, summer greenery, or autumn foliage. Your guide provides the historical context for both sites.

After the morning sites, you break for lunch with local dishes your guide recommends. The afternoon shifts to leisure: you're transferred to Tangshan Hot Spring, one of China's four most famous hot spring centers, fed by genuine natural springs. The resort spreads over a garden with more than 50 open-air pools of different sizes and temperatures (coconut milk pools, coffee pools, herb pools, alcohol pools, aromatherapy pools, waterfall pools), so you choose which ones to soak in. The resort also offers beauty and health treatments if you want them. After you've had your fill, the driver takes you back to your Nanjing location.

The tour operates in all weather, so bring appropriate clothing. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Infants can sit on a lap or ride in a stroller. If you have dietary needs, mention them when you book. The guide speaks English or Chinese, and the air-conditioned car is included in the pickup.
