If history and culture matter more, the Nanjing Museum, Massacre Museum, or Imperial Exam Museum are options the guide knows well and can navigate you through.

The guide speaks English and Chinese, which means you're not translating signs or menus on your own. If time allows and you want to shop, the guide can take you through the Confucius Temple markets, where they'll explain local customs and help you find souvenirs without the usual confusion. You choose whether to book the guide alone or add a private air-conditioned car and driver. Without the car, public transportation is available nearby. At the end of the day, the guide drops you back at your downtown hotel.
