The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Chengdu hotel at 7:30am and a drive west to Mt Qingcheng, one of the birthplaces of Chinese Taoism. A sightseeing vehicle takes you to the main gate, where you begin a light hike to the lakeside, then ride a cable car partway up. From there, the trail continues through the mountain to Shangqing Palace and Laojun Pavilion at the 1,600-meter peak, passing temples and viewpoints along the way. The quiet reputation Qingcheng holds, "the world" in Chinese mountain lore, comes from the forests and the pace itself: this is not a rush.

After descending and a quick lunch stop (optional, at your own cost), you drive to Dujiangyan Irrigation System, 10 kilometers away. Built over 2,000 years ago without cement or machinery, the dam still controls water flow to the region's farmland. You walk the structure and learn how it was engineered to split the river into irrigation and flood channels. A system so effective it has never needed replacement. The tour ends with a return drive to Chengdu, arriving around 6pm.
