The experience
Your guide and driver pick you up at your hotel at 7:15am for the 1.5-hour drive to Mount Qingcheng, timed to beat the traffic and arrive when the mountain is quietest. An eco golf car takes you to the gate, where Taoist-style architecture opens onto winding paths through moss-covered roofs and ancient temples. A half-hour walk uphill leads to Moon City Lake. From there the cable car lifts you to Shangqing Palace, the most significant Taoist temple on the mountain. The hike continues to Laojun Pavilion at the top, where clear weather reveals views across Dujiangyan city and beyond. You descend by cable car from Shangqing Palace, then walk 30 minutes back to the exit.
After lunch at a local restaurant, the tour moves to Dujiangyan Irrigation System, built in the Qin Dynasty (220 BC) and still functioning. Your guide explains how the ancient engineering works: the Fish Mouth Weir and Bottle-Neck Channel that have watered the region for over two millennia. You cross the Anlan Suspension Bridge to see the main structures, then walk through Lidui Park and a quiet bonsai garden before your driver returns you to your hotel around 5pm.
The tour operates in all weather. Bring comfortable walking shoes and dress for the conditions. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you prefer a later departure time, let the operator know when booking.
