The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Huangshan hotel, railway station or airport. Your guide and driver take you to the scenic center, where you board the cableway for the ascent. The cabin ride itself is part of the experience, with views opening as you rise. Once at the top, you trek between the mountain's signature formations: the Guest Greeting Pine, Lion Peak, Flying Over Rock, and the Flower Grown out of a Writing Brush Rock. The peaks are what drew ancient poets and painters here. The sea clouds roll between them, and the pine trees grow at angles that seem to defy the stone. You'll stop at Dispelling Cloud Pavilion and Bright Summit for the wider views, and break for a local lunch partway through.
After the mountain, you descend by cableway and transfer to Tunxi Old Street, a preserved stretch lined with Song, Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings. The street holds local crafts, markets and food stalls. It's the kind of place where you can wander without a schedule and pick up whatever catches your eye. Your guide can point out the architecture and the history, or you can simply walk it at your own pace. When you're ready, the driver takes you back to your hotel, station or airport.
