The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup in Huangshan city at 8am and a one-hour drive to the mountain's base. From there, a scenic bus takes you to the Yungu cable car station, then a 10-minute cable car ride deposits you at the summit. The hiking distance is yours to set (anywhere from 1km to 10km depending on your energy), so you control the pace and the stops.

The route moves through the West Sea Grand Canyon, a landscape the operator calls "dream valley" because it exists only in dreams elsewhere. You'll pass the Cloud Dispelling Pavilion and reach three of Huangshan's highest peaks: Lotus Peak at 1,864 meters (the mountain's highest point), Bright Summit at 1,860 meters, and Capital Heaven Peak, also at 1,860 meters. The peaks frame rock formations with names drawn from Chinese painting (the Brush Rock, the Flying Over Rock), and the views shift as you move between them.

Lunch happens at the Xihai Hotel on the summit itself, a 5-star property serving a buffet with 20 hot dishes, 10 cold dishes, four kinds of fruit, eight kinds of drink, plus fried rice, noodles, cake and bread. You carry no money and no food. Everything is arranged. The descent follows the same cable car and scenic bus route back to your hotel, with the tour ending around 4pm.
