The experience
This tour moves through the western neighborhoods of downtown Guangzhou at a walking pace, stopping at sites most visitors miss. You start with dim sum lunch at a local restaurant, then walk Shamian Island to hear the history of the foreign concessions and the old Canton trade. The guide explains the opium war and the architecture that remains from that era. From there you move through the Chinese traditional medicine market, where the guide shows you how the remedies work, then walk Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street to try Cantonese street desserts.
The second half takes you into the quieter parts of the old town: a wet market, Liwan Lake Park, and finally the Taoist Temple, where you learn about one of China's Han religions. The tour ends at the Ming Dynasty city walls, which have stood for 600 years and are the oldest existing walls in Guangzhou. You'll walk through the park and see the Five-Ram Sculpture and other historic landmarks. A local guide leads the whole route and provides context for what you're seeing. What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Cantonese and Chinese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (7 to 12 years); Infant (under 2).
What exactly is dim sum and where do we eat it on this tour?
Dim sum is a Cantonese tradition of small steamed or fried dumplings and buns filled with meat, seafood or vegetables, served with tea. On this tour you'll have dim sum as lunch at a neighborhood restaurant in the local area, not at a tourist venue, so you're eating what Guangzhou residents actually eat.
How much walking is involved and what's the pace like?
The tour is 5 hours total and covers several neighborhoods on foot, with stops at markets, temples and historic sites. The pace is steady but not rushed. You're walking through the city and pausing to explore each location, so it's manageable for most fitness levels.
What is Shamian Island and why is it important to Guangzhou's history?
Shamian Island was a foreign concession during the colonial era, where British and French traders established their quarters. The guide walks you through the island and explains the intriguing history of the old Canton trade and the opium war, showing you the architecture and layout that remain from that period.
What is the Taoist Temple like, and do we have time to explore it properly?
The Taoist Temple is one of Guangzhou's Han traditional religious sites. The tour includes a walk through the temple where the guide explains Taoism and its role in Chinese culture. It's one of several stops in the second half of the day, so you have time to look around and ask questions.
Does the tour include transportation between the different sites, or is it all walking?
The tour is primarily walking through the neighborhoods and between nearby attractions. Public transportation options are available nearby if needed, but the route is designed as a walking tour through connected areas of the old city.
