The Experience

The bullet train from Hong Kong West Kowloon reaches Guangzhou in just over an hour, and your guide meets you at the station with a sign bearing your name. From there, the day unfolds as a mix of driving and walking through the old city. You'll see the Stone House—a grand French cathedral built in the 19th century and still open to the public—then move on to Shamian Island, an artificial peninsula created by British and French colonists after the First Opium War. The island's western-style buildings once housed consulates, banks, a hospital and a police station; today it's a quiet place to walk, lined with art galleries and used by local couples for wedding photographs.

A pedestrian shopping street in the old downtown gives you a sense of how locals actually move through the city. Called a "Qilou" street in Cantonese style, it's a thousand meters of shops selling shoes, clothes, fruit, jewelry and local food—no vehicles allowed, no tour crowds, just the pace of the neighborhood. From there, a park walk takes in the Five-Ram Statue (Guangzhou's oldest landmark), the 600-year-old city wall from the Ming Dynasty, the Zhenhai Tower (a five-story ancient building now serving as the city museum), and the Sun Yat-sen Monument. Your guide explains the history as you move through.

The Chen Clan Academy, built in 1893 and now Guangzhou's most famous folk art museum, holds wood carvings, porcelain, brick work, iron castings, paintings and embroidery spanning centuries. The Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King is the final major stop—you walk through narrow tunnels into the actual 2,000-year-old tomb of a Han Dynasty ruler, then visit the museum above ground to see the armor, instruments, jade and other artifacts unearthed in 1983. Your guide provides the history of the Nanyue Kingdom that once controlled this region. By late afternoon, you're back at the station in time for your return train to Hong Kong.
