The experience

You get picked up at your Guangzhou hotel at a time you choose, and the first stop is Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, a Qing Dynasty mansion that now holds the city's folk art collection: intricate wood, brick and stone carvings, silk embroideries, ceramics and paintings. From there the route moves to Lychee Bay and the Xiguan Antique City, where you walk along the canal past locals playing chess, singing and boating, and stop at an ancient temple and Bruce Lee's old house in the area. The guide knows the stalls and can point out what matters.

Canton Tower comes next: the world's tallest TV tower, built with a distinctive narrow waist that gives it the nickname "Slim Waist." If the weather is clear, you can pay to visit the observation deck and see both the old and new city spread out along the Pearl River. After that, the tour moves into shopping. Guangzhou is China's largest manufacturing hub, and the guide takes you through pedestrian streets, garment markets, tea markets, traditional medicine shops, jewelry stalls and electronics vendors.
