The experience
Six to seven hours covers the drive from Chengdu, the time at Dujiangyan, and the climb on Mount Qingcheng. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built around 256 BC by the State of Qin as both an irrigation and flood control project on the Min River, the longest tributary of the Yangtze, and it still operates today. You board the Qinyan Tower to overlook the entire water conservancy project from above: the scale and layout of the ancient engineering become clear from that vantage. The system sits at the confluence between the Sichuan basin and the Tibetan plateau, in the west part of the Chengdu Plain.
After lunch, the car takes you to Mount Qingcheng, which rises only 1,260 meters (4,133 feet) but is one of the best day trekking options around Chengdu. The mountain is one of the four famous mountains of Taoism in China and one of the most important Taoist centres in the country. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the Dujiangyan Giant Panda Center. The trek is manageable for most fitness levels, and the mountain's cultural significance, as a birthplace of Taoism, gives the climb its own weight beyond the physical ascent.
