Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Beijing's traditional alleyways

  • Visit Dongsi Hutongs

“If you can eat it on a stick, it’s probably from here,” Li grinned as we ducked under a faded red lantern into the first narrow alley. The Dongsi hutongs felt like another world — scooters zipping past, neighbors chatting over bowls of noodles, and that faint smell of sesame oil everywhere. Li waved to someone selling candied hawthorn (tanghulu), then handed me one. Sticky, sweet, and a little tart — I didn’t expect to like it so much.

I’d told Li I was vegetarian before we met up (they ask when you book), and somehow every stop had something for me. We squeezed onto tiny stools at a noodle shop where the cook barely looked up but slid us two steaming bowls of zhajiang mian. The sauce was salty and rich; the noodles chewy in that way you only get when they’re handmade. People kept coming in and out — some just for dumplings to go — and nobody seemed to mind us lingering. I tried to say thank you in Mandarin; Li laughed and corrected me gently (I’m still not sure I got it right).

There was this moment outside an old bakery where the air smelled like toasted flour and rain on stone. We watched an old man slap dough into perfect rounds for huoshao — beef for Li, veggie for me. It wasn’t fancy or anything, but it tasted like someone’s childhood snack. By the end, I was full but somehow found room for green tea ice cream from a window stall. The tour ended kind of quietly — no big send-off — just Li telling me which subway line to take home if I wanted to wander more. I still think about those alleys at dusk.
