The Experience

I’ll be honest, I thought the “skip the line” thing was just a marketing trick—turns out, it’s real. We pulled up to the Summer Palace and our guide, Li, just waved us through like she owned the place. The air was thick with that Beijing summer smell—kind of sweet, kind of dusty—and there were families everywhere, kids chasing each other under those old willow trees. I’d seen photos of this place but standing there, hearing the lake slap against the stone steps, it felt different. Bigger somehow.

Li pointed out some details on the Tower of Buddhist Incense—I probably forgot half of them already—but I remember her laughing when I tried to repeat their names in Mandarin. She said my accent sounded “very foreign” but at least I tried.

On the way back down, we wandered through quieter paths where locals played cards under pavilions. No one rushed us—maybe because it was a private tour or maybe because time moves differently inside those walls. Anyway, I still think about that moment by the water, listening to Li talk about emperors and artists who walked here before us.
