The Experience
Stepping out of Beijing airport, I felt that crisp northern air hit my face—kind of a wake-up call after a long flight. Our guide was right there at arrivals, holding a sign with my name (always a relief). After customs—which took about two hours—we hopped into a warm van. Bottled water was waiting for us, which honestly felt like a small luxury after airplane coffee.
The drive to Mutianyu Great Wall took just over an hour. On the way, our guide chatted about Beijing’s history and pointed out little things—like how you can spot local farmers selling apples by the roadside in autumn. At Mutianyu, we skipped the crowds you usually see at Badaling. The wall here winds through thick forest; it was quiet except for the wind and the sound of our shoes on old stone steps. I’ll admit, I took the cable car up (my legs thanked me later), but if you’re feeling bold, there’s a toboggan ride down that looked like pure fun.
Back in the city, we stopped at Tiananmen Square. It’s huge—honestly hard to take in all at once. Our guide pointed out the National Museum and explained why so many families come here on weekends. There were kites flying overhead and vendors selling candied hawthorn sticks near the subway entrance.
The last stop was the Forbidden City. With VIP tickets, we breezed past a line that looked like it could eat up half your layover. Inside, sunlight bounced off those red walls and golden roofs—photos don’t do it justice. We explored some quieter chambers most people miss; our guide knew exactly where to go for stories about emperors and secret gardens. Afterwards, we headed straight back to the airport with time to spare before boarding.
