The Experience
The first thing I noticed when our driver pulled up outside the hotel was how quiet Beijing felt at 7am — just a few bikes clattering past and the usual smell of breakfast oil in the air. Our guide, Li, waved from the front seat and handed us bottled water (I forgot mine, as always). We set off for Mutianyu Great Wall, winding out of the city as the buildings thinned. It took maybe an hour and a half? I lost track after we started swapping stories about weird snacks we’d tried in China — Li laughed when I described my failed attempt at stinky tofu in Chengdu.
When we reached Mutianyu, it was still early enough that only a handful of other people were around. The wall itself looked almost unreal — not crumbling like I expected but solid, stretching over green hills with wildflowers poking up between stones. We took the cable car up (I’m not ashamed to admit I was relieved; those steps are no joke) and walked along the top for a while. There’s this moment where you round a corner and suddenly it’s just silence, wind, and endless wall rolling away into the haze. I stopped to run my hand along one of the bricks — cool, rough, a bit damp from morning mist.
Afterwards we drove on to Gubei Water Town. The place is sort of surreal: old stone bridges over slow water, red lanterns everywhere, shopkeepers chatting in doorways. It smells faintly like wood smoke and river mud. Li pointed out which parts were original village houses and which had been rebuilt — apparently most families here have lived by these canals for generations. We wandered through narrow alleys, tried some candied hawthorn skewers (sticky fingers), watched kids feeding ducks by the reservoir. By late afternoon my legs were tired but I didn’t really want to leave yet; there’s something about watching sunlight flicker off those tiled roofs that sticks with you.
