The Great Wall meets water here, and nowhere else in Beijing does it dip into a lake.

This full-day tour from Beijing combines hiking, boating and optional rafting at Huanghuacheng Great Wall, where the ancient ramparts descend into a reservoir. The itinerary includes round-trip bus transport from downtown Beijing, park admission, an English-speaking guide on the bus, and a boat ride along the water-bound sections of the Wall. You'll have five hours at the site to move at your own pace between the hiking trails and the water, with glass-bottom rafting available for an additional 140 RMB if you want the adrenaline element.

The Experience

The day starts with a two-hour bus ride north from Beijing at 8am, with an English-speaking guide on board. You'll arrive at Huanghuacheng by 10:30 and step directly into the scenic area—no separate entry hassle. The Wall here is unrestored, which means the stone is older-looking and the paths less crowded than the famous sections closer to the city. You get five hours to move between three things: hiking along the ramparts themselves, taking the included boat ride that floats you beneath the Wall where it curves into the water, and simply standing in the landscape without a schedule pushing you forward.

The boat ride is the signature moment—you're on the water looking up at ancient battlements instead of standing on top looking down. If you want the rafting, it's a separate choice at checkout: 140 RMB gets you a mini-train ride to the base and a glass-bottom raft run beneath the watchtowers, which is billed as Asia's only glass-slide rafting experience. It's optional, so the day works whether you add it or not. By 3:30pm you'll regroup at the main entrance, board the bus again, and roll back into downtown Beijing by 6pm.

The tour is nine hours total, door to door. The pace is yours once you're at the site—there's no forced march or timed stops. An English guide travels with the group on the bus and is there to answer questions, but the five hours at Huanghuacheng are unstructured, so you can hike as far as you want, spend time on the water, or sit and watch the Wall's reflection.

Is this one for you? This tour suits small groups and solo travelers who want structure for getting to the site but freedom once they arrive. The five unscheduled hours mean you can hike as much or as little as you want, linger on the water, and add rafting only if the adrenaline appeals to you—no preset itinerary forcing you through stops.

Top questions

What's the difference between Huanghuacheng and the more famous Great Wall sections near Beijing?

Huanghuacheng's ramparts are unrestored and descend into a reservoir, creating the only spot in Beijing where the Wall meets water. The restored sections closer to the city are more crowded and more heavily rebuilt; here you're walking original stone and seeing fewer tour groups.

How much time do I actually spend at the Great Wall itself?

You have five hours at Huanghuacheng once the bus arrives at 10:30am. That's enough time to hike sections of the Wall, take the included boat ride, and either rest or add the optional rafting without feeling rushed.

Is the boat ride included, or do I pay extra for it?

The round-trip boat ride along the water-bound sections of the Wall is included in the tour price. Rafting is separate—140 RMB (about 19 USD) if you want to add it at checkout.

What's the glass-slide rafting, and is it worth doing?

It's a mini-train ride down to the base of the Wall followed by a glass-bottom raft run beneath the ancient watchtowers—described as Asia's only glass-slide rafting experience. It's optional and takes part of your five hours at the site, so you choose based on whether you want the adrenaline element or prefer to spend the time hiking and boating.

How early do I need to be ready, and where does the bus pick up?

The tour meets at a designated point in downtown Beijing at 8am. You'll need to confirm the exact pickup location when you book; public transportation options are available nearby if you're traveling from elsewhere in the city.

What's the fitness level needed for this tour?

The tour requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Hiking sections of the Wall and moving around the site involve uneven terrain. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, or pregnant travelers.
