The Forbidden City sits at the heart of Beijing, and this tour gets you past the ticket office and straight to the guide. You pick your option at checkout: either start your morning at Tian'anmen Square (the world's largest city square, at 440,000 square meters) with a guide's introduction to the surrounding buildings, then walk to the palace; or meet directly at the Meridian Gate, the main entrance, and spend your time inside the walls. Departures run at 7:30 am, 9:30 am, and 11:30 am for the square option, or 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:00 pm for the palace-only tour.

Once inside, the guide takes you to a quiet spot and walks you through the layout before the walking begins. The tour stops at the three ceremonial halls: the Hall of Supreme Harmony (where grand imperial ceremonies happened), the Hall of Central Harmony (where the emperor prepared), and the Hall of Preserving Harmony (for banquets and imperial exams). Then you move into the living quarters: the Hall of Heavenly Purity (the emperor's bedroom and office), the Hall of Union (symbolic for imperial couples), and the Hall of Earthly Tranquillity (the empress's residence). You'll also pass through the west and east chambers and visit museums holding treasures from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The guide shares historical details at each stop. The idea is that 70% of the experience is the stories, 30% is the building itself.

After the guided portion wraps (around 2 to 3 hours depending on your option), you're free to explore the courtyards and the Imperial Garden on your own. Bring your actual passport. It's required for entry and you'll be asked to show it. Arrive 10 minutes early at your meeting point, once the tour departs, late arrivals can't join. In peak season, security checks at Tian'anmen Square can run long. If the wait tops an hour, the group can vote to skip the square and take a bus pass instead, keeping more time for the palace itself.
