The experience
I almost missed the subway stop (blame it on jet lag or maybe just nerves), but our guide Li waved me over with this big grin. First thing she did was hand us bottled water (small detail, but Beijing can get dry). We started at the Temple of Heaven, and I’ll admit: I didn’t expect to be invited into a group of retirees singing old revolutionary songs at 8am. Their voices mixed with the smell of pine needles and the distant thump of someone practicing tai chi with a fan. Li nudged me to try a move: my arms flailed, everyone laughed (me loudest), but somehow that broke the ice for the day.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is even more striking in person. Those blue tiles almost glow if you catch them in the right morning light. Li explained how emperors would walk up the Danbi Bridge alone to pray for crops. I tried to picture that kind of pressure. By late afternoon my legs were tired but my head was buzzing with details: old rituals, smoky incense smells, Li’s jokes about her childhood field trips here (“I always got lost!”). Even now I still think about standing on those ancient stones at Temple of Heaven. Just breathing in Beijing’s past for a minute before heading back into traffic.
