The experience

Four hours is enough to hit the landmarks most visitors come for, but only if the route bends to what you actually want to see. This tour starts with a guide meeting you at your Hangzhou hotel or the train station (morning or afternoon, your choice), and spending a few minutes talking through which sites matter to you. West Lake is the default opening, a UNESCO site where you walk past Lotus Park, the Flower Harbor, and Spring Dawn at Su Causeway, or opt for a boat cruise across the water instead. The guide fills in the history and local stories as you move.

From there, the itinerary branches. Most tours head to Lingyin's scenic area to walk the stone grottos at Flying Peak, where Buddhist statues carved over a thousand years ago sit inside caves in the rock face. Then comes Lingyin Temple itself, one of China's ten most famous Buddhist temples, where you explore the courtyards and learn about the architecture and religious practice from someone who knows the place. But if you've already seen those, you can swap them for a bird's-eye view of West Lake from Leifeng Pagoda or Chenghuang Pagoda, or pivot to Hefang Pedestrian Street, the National Tea Museum, the National Silk Museum, or the former residence of Hu Xueyan. The guide works with what you want.

A comfortable car and experienced driver handle the transport between sites. If you book the morning option with lunch or the afternoon option with dinner, that meal is included. Otherwise you eat on your own schedule. The tour runs about 4 hours as standard. If you want to extend it, each additional hour costs $25. Entrance fees to whatever sites you choose are separate, and you'll want to tell the operator about any dietary needs when you book.

Yes, entrance fees to all the sites you visit (West Lake, Lingyin Temple, Flying Peak, any museums or pagodas) are at your own cost and separate from the tour price.

Where does the pickup happen?

The guide meets you at your downtown Hangzhou hotel or Hangzhou Train Station, whichever you prefer. After the tour, you're dropped off back at your hotel or anywhere else in the Hangzhou city center you'd like to go.
