The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the houses in Valparaíso seemed to lean into each other—like they were sharing secrets in every color you can imagine. We’d just finished a quick wine tasting at Río Tinto (I tried to swirl my glass like I knew what I was doing; our guide, Camila, grinned but didn’t call me out). The drive from Santiago had that early morning quiet, but as soon as we hit Cerro Alegre, everything felt louder—dogs barking, street musicians tuning up somewhere behind a mural of a blue cat. Camila pointed out little details in the graffiti that I would’ve missed; she said some artists come back every year to add new layers. I liked that idea.

We wandered through Plaza Sotomayor where fishermen were hauling crates and yelling jokes I only half understood. There was this salty tang in the air mixed with something sweet—maybe churros? The boat ride at the port was less polished than I expected (the wooden benches creaked), but honestly that made it better. A pelican landed right next to us and just stared. The city looked different from the water—all those bright houses stacked up like someone dropped a box of crayons on a hill.

Viña del Mar felt calmer. There were couples walking along the beach holding hands, kids chasing gulls near the Flower Clock (which is actually bigger than it looks in photos). Lunch wasn’t included but we found this tiny place by the water where I ordered empanadas and probably too much pebre. It’s funny how fast you settle into the rhythm of a place—even if you’re just passing through for a day trip from Santiago. On the drive back, everyone got quiet for a bit. Sun on my face, salt still on my lips—I still think about that view over Valparaíso’s rooftops when we left. Can’t really explain why.
