The experience
Six hours takes you through four separate ecosystems in one morning. You start at Ritoque, a 7-kilometer stretch of wild beach and dunes where pelicans dive vertically for fish and boobies hunt in the shallows. The sand dunes rise 3 kilometers inland, and a short walk to the high ridge opens the whole landscape: lagoon, forest, ocean and sky at once. The air carries salt and pine in equal measure year-round.
The wetland itself sits 200 meters inland from the beach, a protected nesting ground for up to 60 migratory species. Ducks, herons, falcons, seagulls and smaller birds like pipilén and loica move through the shallows and reeds as your guide points them out through the high-powered scope. Fifty meters beyond the lagoon, a pine forest thickens the air with its scent and muffles the sound of the waves. Lunch happens in the shade here, with Chilean empanadas or a vegetarian plate and red wine, while birds call from the branches overhead.
The final stop is Cachagua Island, a rocky outcrop 60 meters from the beach where Humboldt penguins haul out between dives. You watch them from the sand without leaving shore: no boat ride, no extra transfer. Cormorants, pelicans, seals and a variety of gulls share the rocks. Your guide carries binoculars and the spotting scope for closer views, and the vehicle stays air-conditioned for the drive back to Valparaíso.
