itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Torres del Paine and Milodon Cave tour

  • Pick up in Punta Arenas
  • Drive to Puerto Natales
  • Visit Milodon Cave
  • Drive to Torres del Paine Park entrance
  • Walk to Salto Grande waterfall
  • See Sarmiento Lake viewpoint and mountains
  • Observe local wildlife
  • Visit Lake Nordenskjold
  • Visit Laguna Amarga
  • Stop at Cerro Castillo general store
  • Drive back to Punta Arenas

I’ll admit, I was not ready for how long the drive from Punta Arenas to Torres del Paine would feel—there’s this stretch where the landscape just keeps rolling on and you start wondering if you’ll ever see anything but wind-bent grass. But then our guide, Claudio, started telling us about the old sheep farms out here, and suddenly even the empty parts felt like they had stories tucked into them. The van was quiet except for his voice and the occasional creak of someone shifting in their seat. I remember my coffee cooling in my hands as we rolled north.

Our first real stop was the Milodon Cave. It’s bigger than I expected—cold air hits your face when you step inside, and there’s this slightly musty smell that made me think of wet stone. Claudio pointed out a replica of the milodon (some kind of giant sloth, apparently), and I tried to imagine living creatures that size wandering around here. He laughed when I asked if anyone ever found more bones by accident—“Not lately,” he said, “but people still look.” There were a few other travelers poking around but mostly it was just us and the echo of our footsteps.

The park itself is almost too much at first: Nordenskjold Lake is this impossible blue-green color that looks fake until you get close enough to see little ripples moving with the wind. We saw guanacos everywhere—one even stared us down while we tried to take photos—and Claudio kept spotting ñandús before any of us could. The air smelled sharp and clean, almost metallic near the water. At Salto Grande waterfall, spray hit my face and I nearly slipped on a rock (don’t wear smooth-soled shoes). Lunch was simple but good—sandwiches with ham and cheese, nothing fancy but after all that walking it tasted perfect.

On the way back we stopped at this general store in Cerro Castillo for coffee and snacks; honestly, I could’ve stayed there longer just watching locals come in for groceries or chat at the counter. The light outside had gone all gold by then—the kind that makes everything look softer than it really is. Five hours back to Punta Arenas felt quieter somehow; everyone dozed or stared out at sheep dotting the fields. I still think about that lake sometimes when things feel too busy—you know?
