The experience
The early start is the whole point: you arrive at the Tatio Geysers while the thermal vents are still steaming hard against the cold dawn air. The drive takes about an hour from San Pedro de Atacama, climbing to 4,200 meters above sea level. Your guide walks you through the geothermal field, explaining how the geysers work and what they mean to the region, then you eat breakfast (fruits, bread, cheese, cake, coffee, tea) sitting in the middle of the Andean plateau with the landscape still quiet around you.
From there, the tour drops you into two more ecosystems. Vado del Río Putana is a 30-minute stop where you watch flamingos and other Andean birds at a lagoon, seeing the endemic flora and fauna that survive at this altitude. Machuca village comes last: a small adobe settlement famous for its old church and for serving llama roast to visitors. The village closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, so that stop doesn't happen on those days. You're back in San Pedro de Atacama after about six hours total.
