The experience
The day begins at your hotel with pickup, then moves through Santiago's core landmarks: Cerro Santa Lucia, where the first Spanish settlers built a fort and where you can see the city from the main tower; the Civic District with La Moneda Government Palace (where the changing of the guard happens every two days at 10 a.m.); the courts of Justice and Pre-Columbian Museum on Bandera pedestrian street; Plaza de Armas with its sculpture of the Conqueror and the Cathedral of Santiago reflected against modern buildings; and the National Historical Museum, which traces the presidents of Chile, the military coup and the Pacific War. A brief stop at the Central Market (ranked among the world's five best by National Geographic) gives you a sense of local food and commerce before you move into Bellavista, the bohemian neighborhood at the foot of San Cristóbal hill with its bars, restaurants and nightlife.
Around midday, the tour passes through Santiago's commercial and financial districts, where modern buildings and parks open views of the Andes. A stop at a craft store showcases lapis lazuli, Chile's national stone, before you break for lunch (at your own cost) and then head to Viña Santa Rita. The winery, founded over 100 years ago, sits in gardens that date back to 1883. Your guide walks you through the cellars and production process, then you taste the vineyard's wines, including its famous "120" label, named after a pivotal moment in Chilean history. The Andean Museum on the grounds displays objects tied to the region's culture and heritage. You return to your hotel between 6 and 7 p.m., depending on city traffic.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese. Children from age one are welcome, and specialized infant seats are available. The tour is LGBTQ+ friendly. Only travelers over 21 receive alcoholic beverages during the tasting.
