The experience
The Central Market in Santiago ranks among National Geographic's top ten food markets worldwide for its mix of fresh local produce and street-level city life. From there the tour moves through downtown Santiago's civic core: La Moneda Palace (seat of the Chilean president), the Metropolitan Cathedral built over forty years starting in 1753, Plaza de la Constitución, and the Central Post Office on the Plaza de Armas. You'll also pass Paseo Ahumada, the four-block retail boulevard connecting two metro stations, and see the Costanera Center, Latin America's tallest building at 300 meters.
The optional winery component takes you into Casablanca Valley to Indomita vineyard. A guide leads a one-hour tour through the park (which includes the Aliwen corner, a recreation of Chile's southern vegetation with Mapuche totem poles), then into the vineyard rows and winemaking cellars. The tasting covers four reserve wines. If you skip the winery, the city tour alone covers Bellavista (the bohemian quarter with galleries and restaurants), Forestal Park along the Mapocho River, and either San Cristóbal Hill or Santa Lucía Hill depending on your option, each offering panoramic views of Santiago against the Andes.
The tour runs seven to eight hours total and travels by air-conditioned minivan in a small group. If you're arriving or departing by cruise ship at Valparaíso, pickup and drop-off at the port are included. Hotel pickups from Santiago are also available. Alcoholic beverages and wine tasting come with the winery option. Each traveler can bring up to two suitcases. Oversized luggage like surfboards or bikes may need advance approval.
