The experience

You arrive at San Antonio or Valparaíso cruise port and board a modern vehicle with secure luggage space for the 1.5-hour drive to Santiago along Route 78. The route cuts through agricultural valleys and gives you a first look at the landscape before the city itself. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and introduces the history and everyday life of the capital as you travel, so the transfer itself becomes the opening of the tour.

The tour moves through Santiago's core: La Moneda Palace, where your guide explains the 1973 coup and its place in Chile's history; Plaza de Armas, the main square founded in 1541, ringed by the Metropolitan Cathedral and City Hall; and Santa Lucía Hill, the site where the conqueror decided to build the city, with viewpoints over the Andes and manicured gardens (closed Mondays). You walk Morandé Street past the Courts of Justice and the former National Congress, then spend about 20 minutes on foot in Bellavista, the bohemian neighborhood with murals, cafés, and the house-museum of poet Pablo Neruda. A stop at Patio Bellavista lets you see jewelry made from copper and lapis lazuli, and you can eat a traditional Chilean lunch there if you choose. You also pass through Lastarria, another cultural hub, and the upscale districts of Vitacura, Las Condes, and Providencia to see how the city's wealthier neighborhoods look. A rest stop includes a lagoon with flamingos and black-necked swans.

At the end of the eight-hour tour, you choose your drop-off: your Santiago hotel or the airport. The vehicle carries up to ten passengers, so the group stays small. Bottled water and an empanada are included. If you want lunch, you arrange it at one of the restaurants along the way, such as Restaurant Galindo in Bellavista.
